Trechoma fanzine ran from 1991 to 1994, releasing four issues that we’re happy to share, thanks to editor Morten Nissen, who gave us permission and even provided one issue we didn’t have. Each issue offers an authentic dive into the metal scene of the early 90s, with a clear focus on death metal as it solidified and matured. You’ll find all the usual suspects here: Entombed, Atheist, Invocator, Paradise Lost, Nocturnus, Morbid Angel, Benediction, Sadus, and Sepultura, and many others, plus detours into doom (Confessor and Candlemass) and progressive metal (Psychotic Waltz), along with tape and album reviews, and playlists.
The interviews are direct and easy-going, with some captured live, right before or after band shows in Esbjerg, a city on the west coast of Denmark and home to the fanzine.
Each issue and page is now fully searchable, thanks to optical character recognition technology. This also lets us perform data analysis that would have been too time-consuming in the past—below, check out a genre treemap displaying the metal styles that dominated these four issues of Trechoma, along with their mention counts.
